After finishing first in the Southwest Conference and then falling to the San Antonio Spurs in the first round of the 2009/10 NBA Playoffs, calls for the team to be revamped arouse and Mark Cuban fulfilled some of that. In a trade that sent Erick Dampier, Matt Carroll and Eduardo Najera to Charlotte, the Mavericks received Tyson Chandler and Alexis Aijinca. The team then resigned Dirk Nowitzki to a 4-year $80 million deal and Brendan Haywood to a 60-year $55 million deal. The team also signed free agent center (and former Spur) Ian Mahinmi. On July 13th the team officially signed their first round draft selection (25th overall).
Look for your Dallas Mavericks to again compete for the Southwest Conference crown and be in direct competition with the Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Lakers and the San Antonio Spurs.
This season the Dallas Mavericks are celebrating 30 years in the National Basketball League and owner Mark Cuban wants nothing more than a NBA Championship as his present. Last season, the Mavs lost to Denver in the Conference Semifinals 4 games to 1. In the offseason, head coach Rick Carlisle and the Mavs signed a number of players, Drew Gooden, Tim Thomas and Quinton Ross. The team also obtained forward Shawn Marion in a trade and drafted Ahmad Nivins and Rodrigue Beaubois.
As of this writing, the Mavericks were sitting at 22-9 and in first place in the Southwest Division and trail the LA Lakers by three games with the San Antonio Spurs hot on their tail in a highly contested Western Conference.
The Dallas Mavericks began life in the NBA six seasons after the Dallas Chaparrals moved to become the San Antonio Spurs. The team was named the Mavericks, a reference to a role former owner James Garner made famous in the late 50’s and early 60’s. The team’s first coach, Hall of Famer Dick Motta, led the team to 15-67 record. Motta would lead the team for seven years compiling a .465 winning percentage. John MacLeod took over in the 87/88 campaign and had a record of 96-79 (.549). The team would go through six coaches before they finally got the complete package they were looking for.
The 2005/06 season was marked by Coach Johnson winning the Coach of the Month award consecutive months, reached the 60 win plateau en route to the franchise’s first Conference Championship and NBA Finals series. They would be eliminated by the Miami Heat in four games in the finals. The next couple of seasons would be hard for the Mavs as they would accumulate 50+ winning seasons (67-15 in 2006/07 and 51-31 in 2007/08) and were eliminated in the first round of the next two seasons. The “Little General” was dismissed on April 30, 2008.
Taking over for Johnson, the Mavs signed Rick Carlisle to a four year deal 10 days later. Carlisle complied a winning record in his first year of 50-32 (.610) and led his team into the Conference Semifinals where they lost to the Denver Nuggets.
